There's more than that, they are all characters surrounded based on the fact that they like music. In terms of plot and story, yes they are very different, Bill and Ted want to stay together to form a band, while Wayne is more conserned with something more materialistic in that he wants his show on network television and he wants a totally hot babe. However the characters all appeal to the same audience, they all revolve around a musical background. Garth is the oddball in terms of personallity, he is the only one that I see as being reserved. Wayne and Garth and hence different charecters fundamentally, while Bill and Ted are more of the same person in terms of personality. So there are many similarities and differences, but like I said, there is really no way for them to be taken from eachother when they were made...
