As most of you
probably know, Excellent Adventure went on to become one of the most surprising
sleeper hits of 1989, if not the entire 80's! No one expected this little
movie to do anything, and in fact there hadn't been a lot of immediate advance
publicity for the film.
But word of mouth gave the movie its legs, and it was in for a long run!
Opening the first week with an impressive $6,167,651
on 1,196 Screens, the movie
would go on to earn a gross of $40,485,039!
Just as everyone
involved in the project expected, the movie struck a chord with a wide range of
audience demographics, appealing not only to little kids but to adults and teens
as well! It helped to re-establish the fact that there was still a market
for movies aimed at young people and that these movies didn't necessarily have
to come out in the summer to be successful. Herek
was quoted as saying, "Frankly I wasn?t surprised at
all. I always knew the film would be a big success because there were
people like Bill and Ted out there who would respond to the fun, roller coaster
ride aspect. People have a good time watching it and that?s why I knew
it would make money. Nelson and Orion happily saw that potential and
reaped the benefits they so richly deserved because of their faith in the
picture."
