You're right. Someone else e-mailed me that Beethoven wasn't entirely deaf at the time they picked him up (although he was clearly well on the way since he didn't hear the booth land or them coming in to get him during his chamber concert). The music playing on the synthesizer is very high pitched so perhaps he can hear that pitch and that's why he's so tickled by the machine, because he can actually make out the sound of it. The actor did artificially lower his hearing for the part. In the script they only have him reacting to the synthesizer being switched to a "rock and roll" mode, so it they may have changed it to the high pitched tune instead because of his being partly deaf. But only the filmmakers know for sure! ;) Party On!
