You're talking about the pole Ted is holding, right? That's a sledgehammer. In the original version of the movie a demon visits them and gives them sledgehammers to break up the rock they are on. Ted ends up enjoying it! This is also the part where the demon pulled a rat out of his mouth and Ted says, "We totally knew a guy who got one of those in his bucket of chicken!" All omitted from the final cut. :(
