I always thought it was funny how Back to the Future fans can very seriously (and fascinatingly) go into depth on the time travel theories, paradoxes and the possible science behing the flux capacitor. Bill and Ted fans are more apt to accept the "Modern Technology" explanation and leave it at that. :)
You bring up a very interesting paradox in that they do learn Rufus' name from their future selves. I have a feeling Ed and Chris didn't think of that one! Or if they did they were having a little fun at our expense (they do tend to not take this stuff too seriously, one can tell).
As for the Time Van, yes it's true! An original version of the script has them travelling around in a van. This was later deemed to be too similar to the DeLorean idea from BTTF and the travel apparatus was changed to a phone booth (guess they weren't as worried about mimicking Doctor Who!).
I plan to write up a lot of information about the developments of both films, hopefully sometime in the *near* future (life has been intruding far too much lately) and this will include more about the original time van concept, so stay tuned! Party On!
