The dictionary defines esquire several ways (including a candidate for knighthood in medieval times and also a woman's escort!). But the definition which explains Bill's use of the term is "A title of courtesy after a man's full name." It's just to make a name sound more "lofty" and respected, if you will. It's likely Bill tacked it on himself at some point. Here's an interesting tidbit . . . in various places related to the movie (i.e. computer game boxes and such) I remember seeing Ted refered to as Ted "Theodore" Logan III! The Third?? Well, that's not anywhere in the movies! I can't recall offhand if it was in the scripts or not, but it certainly was used a few times in promotion! When I get time to do more updates things like that will be available for all to read on this site. Not bad!
