hey, find something you both have in common (even if its something stupid like an allergy of carrots) and get to know him and his lady friend as mates, hang with them, when him and his lady friend have a tiff, be ther for him, be caring, gentle, etc etc, then when they break up (hehe, hopeful thinking) step in and declare your love :)

oh god, it sounds so simple! (lol)
